Parents for Public Schools of Houston

I am a lifelong resident of District H and proud graduate of HISD’s Janowski Elementary, Burbank Middle School and Jeff Davis High School. Through hard work and perseverance, I became the first in my family to graduate from college earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science in 2000 from the University of Houston, a Master of Arts in International Administration from the University of Miami in 2007 and a Master of Public Administration from Florida International University in 2008.

I am an active community leader in public education spending an average of three days/week  supporting HISD public schools.  I am personally involved in my four nieces’ and nephews’ public school education at Lyons and Janowski ES and believes that everyone in the community must be involved in the education of our children. I hold leadership positions with several Davis High School groups including the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), the Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) and the Project Advisory Team (PAT). Due, in part to my efforts, Davis High School secured 40 million dollars more from the bond than initially allocated.

I am an active board member of Parents for Public Schools of Houston and led a group of parents to Austin during the last session of the Texas Legislature to demand full funding for public education in Texas. I also conduct parent education workshops including “Legislative 101” and how to advocate for one’s children in the public education system.

In 2010 I founded Student Vote Project to increase the number of  high school and college age voters actively participating in elections. In the last three years, I have personally registered several thousand students throughout HISD and the greater Houston area!

I have over 13 years of experience working for government (city, county, federal) and nonprofit organizations. Prior to becoming the Executive Director of the Greater Northside Chamber of Commerce, I was the Community Engagement Coordinator for Project GRAD Houston, working with five high schools (Sam Houston, Reagan, Davis, Yates and Wheatley) helping parents from mostly economically disadvantaged communities become more actively involved in their children’s education.

I also serve in leadership roles in the following organizations:

  • Vice President, Rotary Club of River Oaks
  • Precinct Chair #153
  • Vice President for Membership, Jeff Davis Hispanic Alumni Assoc.
  • 2nd Vice President, LULAC Council 402
  • Secretary, Melrose Civic Club
  • Member, METRO's Northline Community Advisory Board
